Christmas time! A time of wonder, joy, and excitement. This time around Christmas is usually spent preparing for yummy feasts, exchanging thoughtful presents, and spending time with loved ones. But this year may look a little different; this year may feel like the wonder is lost, the joy has been taken, and the excitement is nowhere to be found. As the month of December continues, it almost feels like just another month to make it through. As we wrestle with how Christmas 2020 feels, we should stop and listen.
“While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.”
Luke 2:6-7
Think back to Jesus’ birth, the Savior’s birth. There were many obstacles that could have prevented this miracle. Mary could have allowed fear to overcome her: fear of rejection, fear of the unknown, fear of the discomfort. There was so much that could have overwhelmed Mary and Joseph that first Christmas, but instead that is when they stopped and listened.
“Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.’”
Luke 2:12-14
Jesus was born amidst fear in the unknown. Jesus was born during a time where it also could have felt like the wonder, joy and excitement was lost. But Jesus came to be our "Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace." Jesus came as our Savior to fulfill the promise of restored relationship. The birth of Jesus was the epitome of wonder, joy, and excitement.
Even though this year may look different than any Christmas we have experienced before, we can rest in the promises of Jesus. That He came to be our Wonder, Joy, and Peace.
Christmas time is still here. Take a moment to stop and listen to find the wonder, joy, and excitement of the birth of our Savior.
